USPS Media Mail vs Priority Mail: What You Need to Know Before Shipping Your Products

Over the past few weeks, several of my clients have asked about using USPS Media Mail—some even mentioning it as a way to ship items like t-shirts.
Since I hadn’t personally used Media Mail in my own workflow, I decided to visit the Post Office this weekend to learn more firsthand. What I discovered is important for any business owner handling shipping.
Let’s break it down.
What Is USPS Media Mail?
USPS Media Mail is a cost-effective shipping option designed specifically for educational and informational materials, such as:
Books
DVDs and films
Sound recordings
Printed music
It is a discounted, non-urgent service (typically 2–8 business days) and is priced based on weight.
Sounds great, right? It is—but only if you’re shipping the right items.
The Truth: Media Mail Does NOT Cover T-Shirts
Despite what you may hear, Media Mail cannot be used for apparel, including t-shirts.
Could someone try to send a t-shirt using Media Mail? Sure.
But here’s the risk…
Yes—USPS Can Open Your Package
When you use Media Mail, you are agreeing to the following:
USPS has the right to inspect your package
They do this to verify that only approved materials are included
Some Post Offices (including mine) actively inspect Media Mail shipments
They even have a stamp specifically used for inspected Media Mail packages.
If Your Package Fails Inspection:
It can be returned to you
The recipient may be charged the difference up to Priority Mail pricing
Your shipment could be delayed significantly
Even magazines with advertisements are disqualified—so you can imagine how quickly a non-media item like a t-shirt would be flagged.
Why I Personally Use Priority Mail
While Media Mail may seem appealing due to cost, I choose USPS Priority Mail for my business because it offers:
Speed and reliability
Tracking included
Insurance included
Flat rate options (no need to calculate box size or weight)
Convenience (local access matters!)
Yes, it can be more expensive—but it eliminates risk and creates a better customer experience.
How Shipping Works with Wix
If you’re running an online store through Wix, here’s what you need to know:
Wix gives you full control over your shipping setup, including:
Flat rate shipping
Weight-based pricing
Region-based rules
Local delivery or in-store pickup
Important:
What you charge your customer is up to you—but you are responsible for covering the actual shipping cost.
Why I Recommend Using Shippo with Wix
To simplify the process, Wix integrates with Shippo, a powerful shipping tool that helps automate fulfillment.
Key Benefits:
Discounted shipping rates (USPS, UPS, FedEx)
Bulk or individual label printing
Automatic order syncing
Real-time tracking updates for customers
Easy return label generation
Using Shippo within Wix keeps everything in one place—making it easier to manage both operations and bookkeeping.
Can You Ship Without Shippo?
Yes—you can absolutely take your package directly to USPS, UPS, or FedEx.
However:
You’ll need to manually provide tracking to your customer
You’ll need to track your actual shipping costs vs what you charged
You lose the efficiency of an integrated system
Final Thoughts: Is Media Mail Worth It?
Media Mail may be the cheapest option—but it is not appropriate for most product-based businesses, especially if you’re shipping items like apparel.
Using it incorrectly puts your business at risk for:
Delayed shipments
Unexpected charges
Poor customer experience
My Recommendation:
Choose a shipping method that balances:
Cost
Reliability
Customer satisfaction
And whenever possible, use tools like Wix + Shippo to streamline your workflow and keep everything organized.
